For a majority of users the simplest steps can be most effective. Back up your data regularly to a zip drive, CD or external drive. Do not ever move your computer whilst the hard drive is operating, the read/write arms float over the platters separated by a microscopic layer of air. Moving the drive when the arms are floating in this way is inviting a data recovery crisis If your computer starts doing odd things and especially if it makes weird clicking or whirring sounds turn it off immediately.
